About the Role

We are currently seeking Musical Supervisors onboard cruise ships, responsible for the coordination, planning, and supervision of the musicians, and guest artist activities, in particular for the artistic-musical supervision and development of all musical formats in the Entertainment Department.

Area of responsibility

  • The position holder, in cooperation with the Entertainment Manager, Production Supervisor, Studio Supervisor and Technical Supervisor, is responsible for the coordination, planning and supervision of the musicians and guest artists activities, in particular for the artistic-musical supervision and development of all musical formats in the Entertainment Department.

  • The Company expects each shipboard employee to consistently exemplify the ship product philosophy principles to all team members. Furthermore, all duties and responsibilities must be performed as per ISM/ISO and SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental, hygiene, and safety policies.

  • Every crew member can be required to perform all functions in the various service areas throughout the ship.

  • For every crew member, the fulfillment of host duties towards passengers ("Side Duties") is part of the scope of their duties. This includes, in particular, but not exclusively, guest guiding or greeting at events such as theatre admission, embarkation days, tender operations, passport controls, public holidays etc.

  • All employees must behave politely and professionally at all times. This applies to the physical and verbal contact with guests or colleagues and all areas in which contact with guests and crew members occurs. 

Scope of duties 

  • Responsibility for the workflow of all musical activities as well as in relation to staff reporting directly to them and the associated administrative tasks in close cooperation with the Entertainment management team.

  • Responsibility for the disciplinary supervision of all musicians in the Entertainment department and all related administrative duties.

  • Responsibility for the artistic and content related supervision of all musicians, singers of the ensemble, and all music related activities.

  • Responsible contact person for guest artists in all music-related matters.

  • Proactive guidance and support with synergies. All company performers and guest artists are seen as a unit, whereby the existing synergy potentials are to be identified and used in order to be able to offer an extensive and varied program.

  • Collaboration and co-work with all responsible Management positions for a continuous implementation of such synergies.

  • Re-working of musical programs in cooperation with the Entertainment Management Team and Head Office Entertainment as well as realization of requests and requirements.

  • Participation in the voyage planning of the Entertainment Program, under the guidance of the Entertainment Manager and in collaboration with the  entertainment management team, focusing on the disposition of the staff reporting directly to them.

  • Scheduling of rehearsals and guidance of synergies and different constellations of all musicians and guest artists in music-related matters. Identification of developmental potential, necessary corrections, rehearsal management and work on continuous improvement.

  • Holding regular artistic-conceptual meetings with all musicians, singers and guest artists.

  • Piano-accompaniment of the guest artists, singers and, if possible, integration into the performances and sets of the musicians as well as performance of own concerts.

  • Scheduling and, if required, assumption of the necessary bar piano slots (e.g. cocktail events).

  • Informing the Entertainment Manager of all conflicts and disruptions in the workflow.

  • Responsibility for the condition and care of all pianos on board (Piano tuning, Lifesaver system, etc.).

  • Supervision of all sound checks on board. Contact person for guest artists and musicians in sound matters in all entertainment venues as well as mobile areas.

  • Participation in guest artist meetings.

  • Conducting Pre-Departure Safety Training (PDST) for all new arriving musicians of the Entertainment Team.

  • Creation or updating of detailed handover protocols/manuals for the replacement as well as detailed introduction of the replacement successor to the work area and responsibilities.

  • Communicates in artistic matters with the Music Department of TUI Cruises Program.

  • Maintenance, administration and updating of the digital workplace (sheet music, playbacks, etc.) in accordance with the specifications of the Music Department of TUIC Program.

  • Preparation of an End of Cruise Report to the Entertainment Manager once per cruise.

  • Assisting in the preparation of musician’s and singer’s crew appraisals.

  • General filing, administrative duties, emails, etc.

  • Knowledge of the assigned safety number (from the ship's statutes) and the associated safety task.

  • Understanding and implementing the company's environmental protection regulations in the workplace.

  • Ensuring the careful treatment of all company property.

  • Contact person for all passengers in the event of problems and complaints.

  • Active integration in the ship’s community, participation at team meetings.

  • Active implementation of the product philosophy. 

Qualification/Work Experience

  • Qualified musical education (Study of an instrument / music college desirable) and /or extensive experience in guiding and leading musicians and bands.

  • Very good knowledge of music (focus on popular music, musical), large repertoire.

  • Experience as a repetiteur, musical director or similar, preferably on board a cruise ship.

  • Experience working with and accompanying singers.

  • Confident piano playing ability.

  • Experience in reading and handling sheet music.

  • Band experience is desirable.

  • Experience working and interacting with other artists and technicians.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience in artistic direction.

  • Business fluent English (spoken and written).

  • Knowledge of German and other languages is an advantage.

  • Strong understanding of service and customer orientation.

  • Experience in complaint management.

  • Good general education.
