About the Role

The position holder is responsible for setting up, taking down and operating on-board entertainment sound equipment and for carrying out any related duties, as directed by their direct supervisor and in accordance with the competence level assigned. The Sound Technician is responsible for the use/operation, movement and storage of all sound equipment used for performances by entertainers and during the course of activities organized by Entertainment Department staff as directed by the shore-based Head Office and their direct supervisor.

Area of responsibility

  • The position holder is responsible for setting up, taking down and operating on-board entertainment sound equipment and for carrying out any related duties, as directed by their direct supervisor and in accordance with the competence level assigned. The Sound Technician is responsible for the use/operation, movement and storage of all sound equipment used for performances by entertainers and during the course of activities organised by Entertainment Department staff as directed by the shore-based Head Office and their direct supervisor.

  • The Company expects each shipboard employee to consistently exemplify the ship product philosophy principles to all team members. Furthermore, all duties and responsibilities must be performed as per ISM/ISO and SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental, hygiene, and safety policies.

  • On-board employees may also be required to perform service functions at any of the various service venues throughout the ship.

  • Fulfilling guest service duties for passengers (“Side Duties”) is part of every crew members duty. This pertains in particular, but not exclusively, to guiding or welcoming passengers on occasions such as embarkation days, tendering, passport controls, holidays and so on.

  • Employees are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This applies to physical and verbal interaction with guests or fellow crew members in any area where such interaction could arise.

Scope of duties 

  • Operating and controlling all sound equipment used by the Entertainment Department on board, primarily in the Theatre.

  • Taking charge of and managing all sound technology in the Theatre area (according to the inventory).

  • Handing over all sound technology in the Theatre area (according to the inventory) to your successor at the end of your contract.

  • Taking care of sound for all performances as well as sound programming of shows produced specifically on board as well as special events and guest artist shows.

  • Creating or updating the Handover Documentation for the replacement and providing a detailed introduction of the successor to the work area.

  • Ensuring that equipment is properly maintained and that all parts of your work area are kept clean and tidy.

  • Creating and Updating Inventory lists.

  • Ensuring that equipment is stored securely in a locked area after use.

  • Cooperation, coordination and mutual support in the technical aspects of the entertainment division, especially in the area of expertise/same craft. This also includes temporary support in the operational daily tasks of another technical position with similar profession/craft.

  • Attending team meetings and integrating into the team as a whole.

  •  Assuming host duties, in line with the rules drawn up for this purpose.

  • Knowledge of the assigned safety number (from the ship's statutes) and the associated safety duty.

  • Compliance with the onboard regulations.

  • Assuming additional duties during handover and yard lay-up periods, as well as during cast changes.

  • Treating corporate information as confidential, even after your contract has ended.

  • NOTE: All work carried out becomes the property of the Cruise Liner. This applies to absolutely all content, whether intellectual or artistic in nature, and includes: the programming of controllers, creation of graphics, raw and edited video recordings, lighting or sound cues/programming, rigging cues/programming, computer programs/routines/files, and any other work carried out or utilised for by the Cruise Liner. Additional remuneration cannot be claimed for such work.

  • The Theatre Sound Technician is also responsible for:

  • a. Theatre:

  • i. All the sound equipment in the Theatre area.

  • ii. Operating the sound mixing desk during shows and rehearsals .

  • iii. Maintaining proper sound, programming, soundchecks, technical support and preparing the equipment for other events (e.g. slideshows, talks/presentations, guest artist performances, special events, shipside programs such as Crew Show, Cruise Director Show, Captain´s Meeting etc.).

  • iv. Setting up and taking down mobile systems.

  • b. Maintaining, repairing, retrofitting and ordering new equipment/parts:

  • i. Normal servicing and maintenance, special cleaning of amplifier air filters and other specific technical equipment.

  • ii. Reporting any defects to the supervisor, active and structured error analysis and determining required repair work with the supervisor and on the instruction of the Travel TL as well as the Entertainment Technology Department Head Office. (No authorisation to carry out arbitrary repair work or modifications to electrical or electronic components.)

  • iii. Collaborating with the supervisor for the ordering of expendable and replacement materials.

Qualification/Work Experience

  • Completed specialist training in events technology, with the focus on sound equipment, or a related qualification.

  • Experience as a mixer / operating sound technician for theatre/musical/show productions. Experience in monitor mixing.

  • Very good knowledge of modern analogue and digital sound control systems (Digico, Yamaha, Cadac, Avid, Soundcraft) as well as repairing standard sound equipment.

  • Good knowledge and experience handling wireless microphone systems. Channel management and handling of the remote and scan software  (WirelessSystemManager).

  • Very good knowledge of common audio DAW systems and playback engines (primarily: Ableton, QLab).

  • Handling of digital signal distribution (AES/EBU, Madi, Optocore networks).

  • Handling of Audio Over IP networks (Dante).

  • Experience in programming sound for special events and performances by guest artists.

  • Experience with MIDI and timecode.

  • Good knowledge of English mandatory.

  • Basic knowledge of PC Office Software.
