About the Role

We are seeking String Quartets for cruise ships. Thriving the entertainment department, this role creates a lively atmosphere for guests by curating a diverse and captivating musical program.

Area of responsibility

  • The position holder works as a musician in the entertainment department and provides a varied and engaging music program for the guests.

  • The Company expects each shipboard employee to consistently exemplify the ship product philosophy principles to all team members. Furthermore, all duties and responsibilities must be performed as per ISM/ISO and SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental, hygiene, and safety policies.

  • Every crew member can be required to perform all functions in the various service areas throughout the ship.

  • For every crew member, the fulfillment of host duties toward passengers ("Side Duties") is part of the scope of their duties. This includes, in particular, but not exclusively, guest guiding or greeting at events such as theatre admission, embarkation days, tender operations, passport controls, public holidays, etc.

  • All employees must behave politely and professionally at all times. This applies to the physical and verbal contact with guests or colleagues and all areas in which contact with guests and crew members occurs.

Scope of duties 

  • As a Classical Ensemble musician, duties include performing in concert formats, theater shows, special events, group events, and other entertainment formats, as well as the ship Live TV formats as needed.

  • Responsible for an extensive repertoire:

a. Classical music: at least 3 h of repertoire in the style of Baroque, Classical, Viennese Classical, Romantic, out of which at least 4 finished programs á 45 min.

b. Salon music: at least 2 h of repertoire in the genre of salon music, Viennese waltz, polka, classical hits

c. Bar/Evergreen: at least 3 h repertoire in the genre of evergreens, jazz standards, film music, pop ballads, tangos, and lounge music.

d. Knowledge of crossover pop / rock / light music desired

  • Participating in the development of new synergy performances and events with other onboard artists and guest artists.

  • Attending all required rehearsals for the various entertainment formats.

  • Rehearsing and practicing independently.

  • Reporting any conflicts or disruptions in the work routine to their supervisor.

  • Knowledge of the assigned safety number (from the ship's statutes) and the associated safety task.

  • Assuming additional functions during handover, time spent in the shipyard, and during cast changes.

  • Treating corporate information as confidential, even after the contract has ended.

  • Knowledge, adherence, and implementation of all company policies and procedures.

  • Understanding and implementing the company’s environmental regulations in the workplace.

  • Ensuring the careful treatment of all company property.

  • Active integration in the ship’s community and participation at team meetings.

  • Active implementation of the product philosophy.

  • Ensuring all work is carried out in the most economical manner possible and following the agreed quality standards.

  • Complying with shipboard regulations.

NOTE: All work carried out on board or during rehearsals becomes the property of the Cruise Liner. (Excluded from this are the musician's concert programs prepared before the start of rehearsals.). This applies to absolutely all content, whether intellectual or artistic in nature, and includes choreography, music arrangements, adaptation of lyrics, staging/conceptual work, and any other work performed or used for the Cruise Liner. Additional remuneration cannot be claimed for such work.

Qualification/Work Experience

  • Completed music degree as an instrumentalist or similar artistic qualification as a musician.

  • Proven experience in ensemble playing in the specified instrumentation (no ad hoc instrumentation).

  • Experience in concert performance and music entertainment.

  • Experience as a musician on board a cruise ship is an advantage.

  • Good skills in prima vista playing.

  • Knowledge of English (spoken and written) is required. 

  • A clear understanding of service and customer focus.

  • Good general education.
