About the Role

The Technical Supervisor coordinates and oversees all technical operations within the Entertainment Department onboard. Reporting directly to the Cruise Director, this officer-level position manages the technical execution of shows, maintenance of equipment, and leadership of the technician team.

Area of responsibility

  • The person in this position, under the direction of the Cruise Director and in collaboration with the Production Supervisor, Studio Supervisor, Musical Supervisor, Entertainment Programme Supervisor, and Choreo Coach, is responsible for the coordination, planning, and supervision of all technical matters relating to the Entertainment Department.

  • The Company expects each shipboard employee to consistently exemplify the shipowner product philosophy principles to all team members. Furthermore, all duties and responsibilities must be performed as per ISM/ISO and SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental, hygiene, and safety policies.

  • Every crew member can be required to perform all functions in the various service areas throughout the ship.

  • For every crew member, the fulfillment of host duties toward passengers ("Side Duties") is part of the scope of their duties. This includes, in particular, but not exclusively, guest guiding or greeting at events such as theatre admission, embarkation days, tender operations, passport controls, public holidays, etc.

  • All employees must behave politely and professionally at all times. This applies to the physical and verbal contact with guests or colleagues and all areas in which contact with guests and crew members occurs.

Scope of duties 

  • Responsible for all technical and safety-related aspects in the entertainment area. Planning, coordination, and supervision of all technical matters as well as responsibility for all technical event equipment on board.

  • Disciplinary management of all technicians in the entertainment department and ssociated administrative activities.

  • Taking over and managing all event technology according to the inventory list. 

  • Handover of all event technology according to the inventory list to the successor at the end of the contract.

  • Preparation and updating of the inventory lists.

  • Planning and management of the technical set-up and technical supervision of guest artist shows or the ship's own show formats in close cooperation with the responsible artistic supervisor (Production Supervisor, Studio Supervisor, Musical Supervisor, or Choreo Coach). Technical establishment of new concepts and shows upon request/instruction and in coordination with the shipowner Entertainment and Travelling Management.

  • Technical support of the Production Supervisor in the development of synergies and new concepts on board. Checking the technical feasibility.

  • Technical responsibility for all productions in the theatre and all other venues on the ship.

  • Acting as an inspector in the theatre during running shows to provide immediate analysis and assistance in the event of technical accidents. Compulsory presence in the theatre and wearing of intercom during all shows with aerial acrobatics and/or many stage movements. Immediate availability for all other large events in the theatre or other large venues on board.

  • Responsibility for the regular exchange of feature films, cinema screenings, and for satellites ready for reception when changing routes as well as for the regular transmission of sporting events, if this is possible.

  • Collaboration in the development of the scheduling of all events for future cruises with a focus on the involvement of technicians, set-up times, and scheduling of mobile equipment. Management is carried out by the Cruise Director via the Cruise Planner and by the Production Supervisor via the Entertainment Plan, in close cooperation with the other Entertainment Supervisors.

  • Preparation and control of the daily schedule for the technicians in coordination with the Entertainment Supervisor team (prepared by the Entertainment Programme Supervisor).

  • Technical subordination to the Traveling Technical Supervisor and communication in technical matters with the Entertainment Technology department of shipowner Entertainment.

  • Responsibility for the Chemical Watch list of backstage consumables.

  • Supervise and document rigging inspections and artistic equipment inspections according to SOPs and SQM.

  • Conduct or supervise stage instruction with each new employee or artist performing or working on stage, regardless of department or rank.

  • Conduct or supervise the monthly Emergency Release Training.

  • Conduct aerial platform training with all newly promoted technicians who are expected to work with it.

  • Overseeing compliance with relevant competent persons and expert inspections and archiving the relevant documentation.

  • Responsibility for on-board maintenance activities and instructing technicians in this regard.

  • Compiling, initiating, and checking necessary new orders and repairs via the online tool selected by shipowner Technology and documenting them.

  • Coordinating and monitoring the on- and off-loading of materials for the Entertainment Department and their archiving.

  • Supervision of the professional storage and careful handling of technical equipment by the technicians.

  • Preparation of an End of Cruise Report for the Cruise Director once per cruise. Conduct evaluation meetings and prepare appraisals for direct reports.

  • Carries out and directs appropriate disciplinary action (protocols, action plans, written warnings), in cooperation with and at the direction of the Cruise Director and/or Travel Management Team as required.

  • Checks timesheets of direct reports and reports to the Entertainment Programme Supervisor.

  • Knows the assigned safety number (from the ship's statutes) and the associated safety task.

  • Continuous improvement of workflow and standards, including input for manuals and regulations to the Travelling Manager Team.

  • General filing, administrative tasks, emails, etc.

  • Taking on additional tasks during handover and dockyard lay times, as well as during cast changes.

  • Treating corporate information as confidential, even after your contract has ended.

  • Knowledge, adherence, and implementation of all company policies and procedures

  • Understanding and implementation of the company’s environmental regulations in the workplace.

  • Ensuring the careful treatment of all company property.

  • Contact person for all passengers in the event of problems and complaints.

  • Active integration in the ship’s community.

  • Active implementation of the product philosophy.

  • Ensures that all work is carried out in the most economical manner possible and following the agreed quality standards.

  • Compliance with shipboard regulations.

Qualification/Work Experience

  • Very good knowledge of event technology and stage management.

  • Qualified training or studies in the field of event technology, master craftsman title desirable.

  • Professional experience as a technical manager/production manager.

  • Experience in leading teams.

  • Very good administrative knowledge of MS programs and other IT systems.

  • Business fluent in English (written and spoken), and other language skills are an advantage.

  • Strong economic, budget-orientated thinking.

  • Strong understanding of service and customer-orientation.

  • Experience in complaint management.

  • Experience in the tourism event sector is desirable - preferably on board a cruise ship.

  • Good general knowledge.
