About the Role
As a Theatre Technician, you are responsible for the seamless execution of all technical stage operations. Your primary focus is the setup, operation, and dismantling of stage equipment, props, and set elements for a variety of performances and onboard activities.
Area of responsibility
The position holder is responsible for setting up, taking down and handling/operating all on-board stage equipment and props/stage set elements as directed by their direct supervisor in the respective technical area assigned to him/her and for carrying out any related duties. The Stage Technician is responsible for the use/operation, movement and storage of stage equipment (technical and artistic) used for performances by entertainers and during activities organised by Entertainment Department staff as directed by the shore-based Head Office and their direct supervisor.
The Company expects each shipboard employee to consistently exemplify the shipowner product philosophy principles to all team members. Furthermore, all duties and responsibilities must be performed as per ISM/ISO and SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental, hygiene, and safety policies.
On-board employees may also be required to perform service functions at any of the various service venues throughout the ship.
Fulfilling guest service duties for passengers (“Side Duties”) is part of every crew members duty. This pertains in particular, but not exclusively, to guiding or welcoming passengers on occasions such as embarkation days, tendering, passport controls, holidays and so on.
Employees are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This applies to physical and verbal interaction with guests or fellow crew members in any area where such interaction could arise.
The person in this position is in accordance of their assigned department responsible for maintaining and ensuring all safety aspects of stage and theatre operations, especially during Maintenance, rehearsals and performances, as specified by the land-based headquarters and their direct supervisor.
Scope of duties
Operating and controlling all stage equipment and props/stage set elements used by the Entertainment Department on board, primarily in the Theater.
Responsibility for observing all safety rules concerning the stage operation with orientation to German standards and as specified by the land-based headquarters and their direct supervisor.
Documented instruction of all persons who are working on or behind the stage, according to the “Stage Introduction Verification Log”.
Guarantee of a safe workflow during performances, especially concerning moving stage machinery at sea and during acrobatic show acts.
Operation of stage machinery, especially in scenic operation, both independently and on „cue“, taking special care to flying persons as well as in permanent cooperation with the acrobats and Theatre Manager.
Programming stage machinery, technical support and preparing the equipment for other events (e.g. slideshows, talks/presentations, guest artist performances, special events, shipside programs such as Crew Show, “Celebration”, Cruise Director Show, Captain´s Meeting etc.).
Programming stage machinery for artistic acts in close collaboration with the acrobats and/or acrobat trainers.
Responsibility for and participation in scenic transformations/set changes as well as putting persons in PSAs and/or other artistic material (e.g. rope, tissue, trapeze).
Regulation of stage entrances and exits, coordination in the backstage area and direct communication with the Theatre Manager, FOH-Technicians and Cast, especially during rehearsals and shows.
Participation in the preparation and postprocessing of shows, especially for rehearsals and before, during and after a cast change, including programming of stage machinery.
Regular rehearsals of the acrobatic acts together with the acrobats, and technical setup and supervision of the rehearsals and trainings of the acrobats and dancers.
Set up and removal of stage decoration, furniture and props.
Regular and verifiable inspection of stage machinery and artistry equipment associated lifting accessory/slings and load-bearing equipment according to Monthly Rigging & Artistry Inspection, Weekly Stage Inspection and Daily Point Hoist Log and documentation thereof.
Proper storage of stage decoration, furniture and props with special care for secure storage at sea.
Maintenance and repair of stage equipment, stage decoration, furniture and props as far as authorized, if necessary, requesting repair through other departments or requesting shoreside support via the land-based headquarters, always in cooperation with the direct supervisor on board.
Reporting any defects to the supervisor, active and structured error analysis and determining required repair work with the supervisor and on the instruction of the Travel TL as well as the Entertainment Technology Department Berlin. (No authorisation to carry out arbitrary repair work or modifications to electrical or electronic components. Maintenance and repair of the stage mechanics and electronics is only allowed in cooperation with and according to the instructions of the Entertainment Technology Department Berlin.)
Collaborating with the supervisor for the ordering of expendable and replacement materials.
Producing of stage decoration and props in accordance with the direct supervisor on board.
Creating and updating Inventory lists.
Taking over, taking charge of and managing all stage technology in the Theater (stage decoration, tools, expendable and replacement materials according to the inventory).
Handing over all stage technology in the Theater (stage decoration, tools, expendable and replacement materials according to the inventory) to your successor at the end of your contract.
Instruction of the successor in all specific areas of responsibility, especially stage machinery and safety regulations according to the handover protocol; instruction of the successor in all show relevant processes according to the current show books.
Creating or updating the Handover Documentation for the replacement.
Normal servicing and maintenance of all equipment and props in the area of responsibility (including stage equipment, machinery, textiles and tools) as well as maintaining orderliness and cleanliness in the area of responsibility.
Ensuring that equipment is stored securely in a locked area after use.
Cooperation, coordination and mutual support in the technical aspects of the entertainment division, especially in the area of expertise/same craft. This also includes temporary support in the operational daily tasks of another technical position with similar profession/craft.
Attending team meetings and integrating into the team as a whole.
Assuming host duties, in line with the rules drawn up for this purpose.
Knowledge of the assigned safety number (from the ship's statutes) and the associated safety duty.
Compliance with the onboard regulations.
Assuming additional duties during handover and yard lay-up periods, as well as during cast changes.
Treating corporate information as confidential, even after your contract has ended.
Qualification/Work Experience
Completed specialist training in events technology, with the focus on stage equipment.
Very good knowledge of technical aspects of theatre/show operations.
Experience working with stage/theatre automation control desks (ARTTHEA), other stage/lighting/sound technical equipment and props.
Experience in programming with automation control desks.
Experience in taking care of and implementing special events and performances by guest artists.
Good knowledge of English is mandatory.
Basic knowledge of PC Office Software.
